Allergy Awareness & Management Statement

At Wrotham Road School, we are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all our pupils, including those with severe social, emotional and medical needs. We recognise that food allergies can be life-threatening and we take a proactive, whole-school approach to risk management.

Our Commitment to Safety

Wrotham Road School maintains a robust internal allergy management protocol as part of our Operations and Compliance Manual. This ensures that colleagues are trained in allergen awareness, symptom recognition and the administration of emergency medication (such as Adrenaline Auto-Injectors).

To minimise risk, we operate a strict “No Food Sharing” policy across all year groups and encourage pupils to take age-appropriate responsibility for their food choices.

Parental Responsibilities

The safety of our pupils relies on accurate, up-to-date information. We ask all parents and carers to:

  • Disclose & Document: Complete the Allergy Declaration Form upon admission, providing full details of any food intolerances or allergies.
  • Communicate Changes: Immediately notify the school office of any changes to your child’s allergy status, including new triggers, re-testing results or clinic summaries.
  • Provide Medication: Ensure that any required emergency medication (AAIs, inhalers, or antihistamines) are supplied to the school, is in-date and is replaced before its expiry.
  • Collaborate: Work with our team to create or update a Personal Healthcare Plan and attend meetings as required to ensure your child’s needs are met safely.

Emergency Protocols

In accordance with our Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions Policy, Wrotham Road School holds “spare” emergency Adrenaline Auto-Injectors (AAIs) for use in the event of an emergency. Parents of children prescribed an AAI must provide formal consent for the use of this spare device.

Payment

Hot school lunches must be paid for online through the Arbor payment facility.  Arbor is easy to use and you can top up or view your account balance at anytime on a laptop/tablet/smartphone. School dinner meals now cost £2.90.

All pupils in Years R, 1 and 2 are entitled to free school meals.

Packed Lunches

If your child is bringing their own packed lunch, please send in a clearly named lunchbox so they are not misplaced.
Our aim for our packed lunch children is to ensure that all packed lunches brought from home and consumed within the school (or on educational visits) provide the pupil with healthy and nutritious food, which is now regulated by national standards.
Some healthy lunchbox options might include:
  • at least one portion of fruit and one portion of vegetables every day.
  • meat, fish or other source of non-dairy protein (e.g. lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, hummus and falafel) every day
  • oily fish, such as salmon, at least once every three weeks.
  • a starchy food such as any type of bread, pasta, rice, couscous, noodles, potatoes or other type of cereals every day.
  • dairy food such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, fromage frais or custard every day.
  • only water, fresh fruit juice, milk, yoghurt or milk drinks and smoothies – no fizzy, sugary drinks, cans or glass bottles please.
Fresh drinking water is always available from the canteen area if your child forgets their water bottle.
Packed lunches can also include a small, lunchbox sized chocolate biscuit or bag of mini biscuits, but please do not send pupils in with full-sized chocolate bars or bags of sweets (Haribo, Maoam etc) as these will be given to class teachers to return to parents at the end of the school day.
Reminder: We are a NUT FREE School.  Therefore, please do not send in:
  • peanut butter or any other nut butters (almond, hazelnut, pistachio, cashew, walnut or coconut)
  • hazelnut chocolate spread (this includes ‘Nutella’ and any hazelnut spread products: ‘Kinder Buenos’, ‘Happy Hippos’, ‘Ferrero Rocher’)
