Diversity at Wrotham Road Primary School
At Wrotham Road Primary School, diversity is not an add-on to the curriculum, it is at the heart of everything we do. Our children come from a rich range of cultures, languages, and backgrounds, and we proudly celebrate the individuality that each child brings to our school community. We believe every pupil should see themselves reflected in their learning and feel represented, valued, and inspired.
A Curriculum That Reflects Our Children
Diversity is woven across all subjects, ensuring that learning is relevant, modern, and meaningful to the children in our school. We go beyond teaching diversity in PSHE alone; instead, we embed it throughout all:
- English: Children study books and authors from a variety of cultures and backgrounds, exploring stories that reflect the world they know as well as worlds they may not have experienced yet.
- History: Pupils learn about the contributions of influential multicultural figures who have shaped the past and continue to impact life today.
- Art, Music, Geography, Science, RE and more: Curriculum choices intentionally reflect global perspectives, celebrate cultural influence, and highlight diverse role models.
Our aim is for every child to recognise themselves in the curriculum while gaining a deep understanding of others.
Celebrating Identity and Individuality
At Wrotham Road, we believe children thrive when they can be confidently themselves. We celebrate the uniqueness of every child by:
- Valuing the cultures, languages, and histories they bring with them
- Encouraging pupils to share their experiences, traditions, and interests
- Promoting respect, open-mindedness, and pride in personal identity
- Ensuring our curriculum reflects the modern, diverse society our children live in today
This approach helps children understand both their place in the world and the important part others play in shaping it.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Diversity is lived, not only learned. Our children experience it through:
Assemblies
Whole-school themes, cultural celebrations, and awareness events highlight important figures, festivals, and traditions throughout the year.
Celebrations & Festivities
From Diwali to Christmas, Eid to Black History Month, International Women’s Day and many more, we ensure our children experience the richness of the world around them.
Trips, Visitors and Enrichment
Visits to places of worship, cultural centres, museums, and community venues give pupils first-hand experiences of different traditions and histories. Visitors from a wide range of backgrounds, including our own parents/carers share expertise, stories and achievements that inspire the children.
By embedding diversity meaningfully, we ensure every pupil understands the impact people from all backgrounds have had and continue to have on our shared world. Most importantly, they learn that they too can make a difference.
