Pupil Leadership

Why do we have a School Council?

The School Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. The School Council benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers, because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made. Councillors develop skills such as confidence, communication and negotiation. It is the responsibility of each Councillor to ensure that they express both their own views and the views of all the other pupils they represent.

Who can be a member of the School Council?

We have an active School Council with a boy and girl representing their fellow pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. Each councillor is elected by their classmates at the beginning of the year, after a short presentation explaining why they should be elected.

Our School Council is an important part of our school’s Pupil Voice. Issues are discussed in Class Council Meetings and then the children’s views are brought to the School Council by the representatives. We feel that the school council is an important way to teach children about the importance of democracy and decision-making.

Recent work by the School Council

The School Council have been very busy since being elected in September. They have spoken to their respective classes and gathered information from their peers with regards to what the children love about the school and what they would like to improve.

In 2023, the council raised money for books that can be used in the playgrounds. Thanks to the School and Eco Councillors, each playground now has a large box full of fantastic new books for children to access.

2025 – A Green Flag Year for Wrotham Road!

It’s been a fantastic year for our Eco Council, with their biggest achievement being the award of the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag - a recognition of the hard work, dedication, and environmental impact made by the team throughout the year. Early on, the Eco Councillors identified three key areas to focus on: Biodiversity, School Grounds, and Energy. These formed the basis of their action plan, and they’ve delivered inspiring projects that have made a lasting impact on our school and the wider community.

To raise awareness around energy use, the Eco Council promoted and challenged pupils to take part in November’s  Cut Your Carbon Campaign. They designed a homework challenge for the whole school, asking families to complete six carbon-cutting activities at home. This not only helped reduce our carbon footprint but also involved more people than a school-only initiative could, extending our reach into the community and encouraging sustainable habits at home.

For their school grounds action, the Eco Councillors created a  Rewilding Area in our school allotment. They spent many lunch breaks preparing the area, sowing wildflower seeds, and caring for the space to create a lasting habitat for wildlife. This sustainable project is designed to thrive year after year and will continue to attract and support nature within our school grounds.

Their final major biodiversity project was to promote  No Mow May, challenging students to let their lawns grow at home or to encourage others – including friends, family, and neighbours – to take part. Once again, this broadened the impact beyond our school and raised awareness across the local area. Most importantly, it increased access to wildflowers for pollinators, giving them the vital boost they needed before summer began.

Throughout the year, the Eco Council have kept everyone informed with regular assemblies, social media updates, and features in our newsletter. Their leadership, creativity, and teamwork have brought real change to our school and community, and we are so proud of all they have accomplished. Congratulations to our Eco Councillors for an outstanding year!
